What Is Functional Health Coaching?

Definition

We look for the reasons behind your symptoms — not just ways to manage them.

Functional health coaching is different from general wellness advice. We use your lab data, health history, and lifestyle to build a personal protocol targeting the actual drivers of your symptoms. A 2023 analysis of 104 clinical trials found that this kind of structured coaching produces lasting improvements in energy, quality of life, and chronic illness outcomes — even after the coaching period ends.

104 Randomized Trials Analyzed

The largest ever analysis of health coaching outcomes — covering over 168,000 participants — found significant improvements in quality of life and chronic illness management.

168K+ Study Participants Covered

Clinically meaningful reductions in HbA1c, blood pressure, fasting glucose, LDL cholesterol, BMI, and waist circumference have been documented across the coaching intervention literature.

Your Protocol

The Six Pillars of Your Protocol

Every functional health protocol is built around the same six foundational domains. The application is always specific to you.

Nutrition & Diet

Not a diet plan — a personalized food strategy built around your lab markers, blood sugar patterns, and real schedule. We adjust it as your body responds.

Sleep Optimization

Poor sleep disrupts every other system in your body. We identify the actual drivers — cortisol timing, circadian misalignment, nutrient gaps — and fix them. Not just "sleep hygiene tips."

Stress & HPA Axis

Chronic stress rewires your cortisol rhythm, which breaks everything else. We test your actual cortisol pattern and build a recovery plan around what your data shows — not assumptions.

Movement & Exercise

The wrong exercise at the wrong time makes things worse, not better. We match your movement plan to your current hormonal state and recovery capacity, then adjust as you improve.

Mindset & Behavior Change

Knowing what to do isn't the hard part — doing it consistently is. We work with your real motivations and obstacles so that the changes you make actually stick long after coaching ends.

Lab-Guided Personalization

We use targeted lab testing to create an objective baseline and measure your progress. Every test ordered answers a specific question — we don't run expensive panels for the sake of it.

Client Profiles

Who We Work With

Functional health coaching is not a general wellness service. It is for people who have tried conventional approaches and found them insufficient — and who are ready to work from data.

Executives & High Performers

You're still performing — but you can feel the gap between where you are and where you used to be. Energy is managed rather than felt. Recovery takes longer. We build the metabolic and hormonal foundation for output that's actually sustainable.

Common concerns
  • Declining mental sharpness, word retrieval difficulty, or afternoon cognitive fog
  • Disrupted sleep despite physical exhaustion; reliance on alcohol or sleep aids to downregulate
  • Elevated stress markers, early-stage metabolic risk (high fasting glucose, visceral fat accumulation), or frequent illness

Shift Workers & Irregular Schedule Workers

Irregular schedules put your body in constant conflict with its own rhythms. We build nutrition, sleep, and recovery protocols designed around how your schedule actually works — not how it's supposed to work.

Common concerns
  • Persistent fatigue that does not resolve with time off
  • GI dysfunction, appetite dysregulation, or unexplained weight gain
  • Mood instability, anxiety, or difficulty "switching off" when off shift

Chronic Fatigue, Burnout, or Unexplained Symptoms

You've been told your labs are normal. You've tried the standard advice. And you still feel terrible. We start where your last appointment ended — and actually look for what's driving it.

Common concerns
  • Fatigue unresponsive to rest; post-exertional malaise or energy crashes
  • Cognitive impairment ("brain fog"), poor memory, or difficulty concentrating
  • Hormonal irregularities, disrupted menstrual cycles, temperature dysregulation, or persistent low-grade inflammation

The Process

Your Coaching Journey

A structured engagement designed to move from data to insight to action — in sequence, with intention, and at a pace your biology can absorb.

01

Discovery & Intake

We start with a detailed health history and a 90-minute consultation. We want to understand not just what's wrong now, but the full picture of how you got here — your environment, lifestyle, and symptom timeline.

By the end of this phase, you have a clear working framework — and so do we.

02

Assessment & Lab Review

Where needed, we run targeted lab tests and walk through every result with you in plain language. You get a written summary of what your data shows and a clear priority order for what to address first.

You leave this phase with a written summary of your physiology and a clear intervention sequence — not a stack of confusing results.

03

Protocol Implementation

Your protocol covers the highest-priority areas — nutrition, sleep, stress, movement, and supplementation where evidence supports it. Bi-weekly sessions keep things on track. The plan fits your real life — travel, family, existing routines — not a theoretical ideal.

Most clients report measurable improvements in energy, cognitive clarity, sleep quality, and physical resilience by the end of this phase.

04

Optimization & Maintenance

We retest key markers to document what changed, refine what needs adjusting, and shift focus to independence. Most clients move to monthly or quarterly check-ins — with deeper re-engagement available whenever life changes.

The goal of this phase is a client who no longer needs a coach to maintain their health.

Measurable Results

Measurable Results

Outcomes documented with objective biomarker data — not self-reported impressions.

8 years of afternoon energy crashes — gone within 14 weeks. Blood sugar stabilization, cortisol support, and adjusted meal timing. Confirmed by follow-up fasting insulin and HOMA-IR results.

— Odin Lab Client

Three years of post-viral fatigue and brain fog — resolved through gut support, mitochondrial nutrition, and a carefully paced return to exercise. Measurable HRV and energy improvements at weeks 8 and 16.

— Odin Lab Client

Pre-diabetic fasting glucose normalized, visceral fat reduced, and sleep restored in 12 weeks — for a client told for two years their labs were "not quite bad enough to treat."

Peer-Reviewed Evidence

Evidence Base

Functional health coaching at Odin Lab is grounded in published clinical research — not trends, testimonials, or tradition.

Boehmer KR, Álvarez-Villalobos NA, et al. Patient Education and Counseling, 2023; 116:107975. doi:10.1016/j.pec.2023.107975

Among 104 randomized trials (168,888+ citations screened), health and wellness coaching significantly improved self-efficacy, quality of life, and depression in patients with chronic conditions. A systematic review and meta-analysis representing the largest synthesis of coaching outcomes in chronic illness to date.

Willard-Grace R, Chen EH, Hessler D, et al. Annals of Family Medicine, 2015; 13(2):130–138. doi:10.1370/afm.1768

12-month randomized controlled trial of 441 patients found coaching participants were significantly more likely to achieve at least one clinical goal (46.4% vs. 34.3%, P=.02) for glycemic and cardiovascular risk factor control — demonstrating real-world clinical impact of structured health coaching.

Kwok ZC, Tao A, Chan HY. American Journal of Health Promotion, 2023; 37(4):555–565. doi:10.1177/08901171221137332

Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized and controlled trials found health coaching significantly increased physical activity in middle-aged adults and produced beneficial effects across behavioral and physiological cardiometabolic outcomes — including reductions in HbA1c, blood pressure, and body composition measures.
